Who Was Kobe Bryant At That Time?
Back in 2003, when the incident took place, Kobe Bryant was not just one of the NBA’s biggest stars; he was a Sports Superstar. He was a member of the Los Angeles Lakers and he had been the main driving force behind the Lakers’ three consecutive NBA titles in 2000, 2001, and 2002.
Kobe at that point was just 24 years old. He was married to Vanessa, and they already had a baby together. Thanks to his success and incredible skills, Kobe had become a household name in America.

Why Was Kobe Bryant In Colorado?
In late June 2003, Kobe went to Colorado because he had to undergo knee surgery. The operation was set to take place at a health facility in Vail, Colorado. However, he spent the pre-surgical days in a luxury resort called The Lodge and Spa at Cordillera, located in Edwards, Colorado.
It was during this hotel stay that the whole incident began.
On the night of June 30, 2003, Kobe came across a 19-year-old woman who was a concierge at the resort. They had conversed briefly earlier in the evening and eventually, she proceeded to Kobe’s hotel room.
What went on in that room later turned into a highly publicized court case.
What Did The Woman Tell The Police?
Initially, the woman told the police that everything was going normally. She said that they were first just talking and kissing, but things soon became unbearable for her.
She told the police that Kobe grabbed her by the neck, threw her down on the chair, and had intercourse with her forcibly, even though she told him to stop several times.
After coming out the room, she formally completed work at the resort. Late in the night, she resolved to make a report of the incident.
She went to the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office on July 1, 2003, made a complaint of sexual assault, and also had a medical examination. This report was the one that officially initiated the police investigation.
What Did Kobe Bryant Say About The Incident?
Kobe Bryant acknowledged that sexual intercourse occurred between him and the woman but vehemently denied that he had sexually assaulted her.
He stated that the whole interaction was consensual. At first, when the police questioned him on July 2, 2003, he said that there was no sex, but he later changed his statement and admitted that sexual intercourse took place.
He said that he thought the woman was voluntarily taking part.
Besides that, Kobe, in a public press conference, made another admission. He confessed that he had cheated on his wife, Vanessa Bryant. While denying that he had forced anyone, he admitted that the affair was a mistake in his marriage.
How Did The Case Turn Into Criminal Charges?
After the complaint was filed, the police started gathering the evidence necessary to make a case.
On July 4, 2003, police issued a robbery warrant for Kobe Bryant. A couple of days later, he showed up at the police station, was given a $25,000 release, and went back home while the case was going on.
On July 18, 2003, however, prosecutors officially indicted him for felony sexual assault.
