Spectrum Class Action Lawsuit Accuses Company of Fake “Broadcast Fees”

Spectrum is already super famous in the country, with millions of subscribers who use their cable and broadband services. So it is pretty obvious that you see their name in the headlines when they make some big move that impacts customers. Though right now, their name is being used in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, actually, see, there is this Spectrum Class Action Lawsuit going on, and it is hitting them big time. It has nothing to do with their actual services, but it has everything to do with how they bill their customers and the shady practices that were going on behind the scenes.

The Fee Lawsuit: Those Extra Charges on Customer Bills

Have you ever heard of a thing called the “Broadcast TV Surcharge”? Well, at first, a man named Richard Wookey from Kentucky noticed this charge and saw the pattern that Spectrum was charging this extra fee from their customers as if it were something mandatory. Like a government charge or something. But nah, it is nothing like that at all.

So far, we have seen that Spectrum claims this fee, as per, helps cover costs, in actuality, for sending local TV channels through their network. To be precise here, their reasoning is that local broadcasters charge them, so they have to pass that cost to you, as per the details that are already out.

And sure, to many of you, at first, the numbers might seem like small, but just bear with us, the actual number is literally mind-boggling. Like for example, the lawsuit mentions that Spectrum collects around $28 a month, to give you a perspective on things, from each customer, exactly, for this surcharge. Well then, if that fee really was to cover broadcasting costs, Spectrum would be paying, no two ways about it, over $33 million a year to local stations.

But as per the claims and allegations of this lawsuit, that number just doesn’t add up.

What the Lawsuit Claims

In simple terms, Spectrum is being accused, as of now, of breaking promises and, more like, not showing customers the real cost of their services, which should have been much lower. Keep on reading, it’s the kind of situation where you see one price in the ad, but when the bill comes, the total is higher, probably, because of extra fees you never agreed to. This is what the lawyers are now referring to as the “bait-and-switch” tactic.

The case is still ongoing, but if this lawsuit goes in the favor of the customers, it will result in a HUGE settlement.

The Investor Lawsuit: Spectrum’s Stock Trouble

Other than the basic class action lawsuit, which we previously mentioned, there is this investor lawsuit as well that Spectrum is dealing with.

What’s this one about? Well, just to be a whole lot clearer here, this one isn’t about monthly bills; as per, it’s about how Spectrum’s parent company, Charter Communications, talked to its shareholders. To be precise about the details, in August 2025, the law firm Levi & Korsinsky, as of this year, filed a lawsuit on behalf of investors who owned Charter stock between July 26, 2024, and July 24, 2025.

Do you even have any idea that they claim Spectrum’s top executives made the company look stronger than it actually was, straight up, by leaving out some pretty important details? That may not sound like a big thing, but in actuality, it is downright illegal and unethical.

In 2021, the U.S. government launched the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). For those who don’t know yet, this one specifically helped low-income households afford internet access. This was the program that allowed Spectrum to gain so many new customers, but by the year 2024, the funding ran out for this program, and many of the customers just couldn’t keep their internet service running anymore.

This was a huge thing that the investors should have known about, but the thing is, Spectrum didn’t tell them beforehand. And when the details came out in the investigation, it was a big blow for the investors out there, and many of them weren’t thrilled about it all.
