BUT, there are a few big problems that comes with it too, and that is precisely what this lawsuit goes over. So, if you don’t know why this case is being talked about a lot, just keep on reading then.

What Is MyChart and Who Owns It?

Mychart Lawsuit

See, it is just recently that the Electronic Health Records (EHR) industry has grown pretty fast and big, and sure enough, right here in the country, MyChart is a big and popular name in this niche. This is just an online patient portal made by none other than Epic Systems, and just to give you an idea of how good it is, see, hospitals and healthcare professionals use this portal all across the country. For what? Well, to securely access their medical records, lab results, prescriptions, and other healthcare services online. It’s THAT good, actually!

Since the launch of the platform, there has been this perception of data security always, but in recent times, there have been lawsuits that suggest otherwise. If you don’t know the whole thing, just keep on reading then.

The SSM Health MyChart Privacy Lawsuit

First of all, let’s talk about the case that involves incidents between July 6, 2020, and February 10, 2023, when patients using SSM Health’s MyChart portal and they allege that their data, aka health records, were shared with third parties without them even knowing about it all. They say (and strongly say) that there were tracking tools embedded in the portal that were sending this sensitive data to companies like Meta. Why? Well, they can very well use this data to profit from it.

Well, this case went on for a while, but then SSM Health actually decided to settle this case through a class-action settlement. As for the important dates in this case so far, see, Preliminary approval was granted on September 2, 2025, and final approval on November 21, 2025.

Eligible patients could receive:

  • A cash payment of $31.50
  • Or one year of privacy protection services through CyEx Privacy Shield Pro, which includes dark web monitoring and data broker opt-outs

And before that, you should know that, actually, the claim-filing deadline was November 25, 2025. But worry not, a lot of people filed their claim, and that’s because as many as 1.2 million patients were estimated to be affected.

The Texas Antitrust Lawsuit Against Epic Systems

And then there is this recent case where the State of Texas sued Epic Systems in December 2025, and is still ongoing.

What’s the matter then? It is more about the market share than the data privacy issue. See, according to the state officials, Epic actually holds control of the majority market share in this niche, and that makes it competitors to thrive or even operate.

Other than that, this is not the only issue here; see, the lawsuit also argues that Epic’s MyChart settings restrict parents from accessing their minor children’s medical records, especially after the child turns 12. Like, as per the details of this case and the allegations made, the platform is deliberately known to hide certain medical details by default, which Texas says violates state laws granting parents access to their children’s health information.
