Unlawful arrests in the country aren’t even that rare in the country, and that can be seen over and over again on social media. And the same thing is being repeated in the Jason Killinger Lawsuit, mainly because there was a mistake from a Casino’s end, and the officer that were present at the site went on to side with the Casino, and that’s what resulted in all this complexity of this case. It sure was Casino’s facial recognition system’s fault, but when the arrest was made, it became something else. Let’s just talk about it a bit more.
Who Is Jason Killinger?
Jason Killinger is a long-term, aka super-experienced truck driver who works for UPS. As with many drivers who spend long hours on the road, he sometimes stops to take a rest after finishing a delivery trip.
On September 17, 2023, Killinger went into the Peppermill Casino in Reno, Nevada. He had just completed a work trip and, like any regular visitor, decided to drop by the casino. There was nothing unusual about that.
However, the instant he stepped in, the casino’s facial recognition system scanned his face and mistakenly identified him as a different person.
And that is where the trouble began.
What Happened At The Peppermill Casino?
Apparently, the Peppermill Casino relied on an AI-based facial recognition system to identify the persons who had been prohibited from returning to the casino. The idea of these systems is to compare a person’s face with the photos stored in their database.
The system, upon detecting Killinger at the casino, mistakenly identified him as Michael Ellis, who had been the casino’s record for a banned person after one of his incidents involving sleeping in the casino.
It is said that the system came up with the extremely high match score. Some sources cited a 99.9% match, and the court papers even spoke of a 100% match.
However, there was something very wrong here.
Killinger was definitely not Michael Ellis.
In fact, it is reported that the two men even differed in height, weight, and are of different eye color. Even so, the casino security team was convinced with the computer-generated result and went ahead with treating Killinger as the banned individual.
The security intercepted him and started interrogating him immediately.
Why Did Security Call The Police?
Killinger was quick to display his identification when security locked onto him. The man handed his driver’s license to the security team with his name indicated as Jason James Killinger. Yet, the casino employees thought the ID was not real.
Since they were suspicious of the ID, the security department got in touch with the Reno Police Department. Their thinking was that a banned person who had been using false identification had come back.
Shortly after, Reno police officer Richard Jager showed up at the casino.
And that is when things got really out of hand.
Why Did The Officer Arrest Him?
Officer Jager still thought there was a chance that the ID documents were counterfeit. To put it simply, he suspected that Killinger could have gotten the fake documents.
During the discussion, the officer allegedly implied that Killinger could have gotten the assistance from a person at the DMV to make the fake IDs.
Using the police databases, the officer tried to clarify the matter. Still, instead of explaining things, the perplexity went on.
In the end, the officer chose to make an arrest.
Killinger was cuffed and taken to the police station. And sure enough, when this kind of unlawful arrest is being made, that right there is just an invitation for a lawsuit, and that’s what followed down the line.
