If you’re a woman right here in the country, at some point, you must have heard of the Mirena IUD, right? How Did the Mirena Lawsuit Even Start?
It could be that you don’t even know yet about Mirena, right? In that case, just to brief you a little bit here, see, Mirena is a tiny, pliable, T-shaped intrauterine device (IUD) from Bayer Pharmaceuticals. Get it? And as for how it works, see, it is inserted by a doctor in the uterus where it gradually releases a hormone (levonorgestrel) that prevents pregnancy for up to five years. And this was the very reason why the FDA gave its first green light to Mirena in 2000, and later, in 2009, widened its approval to cover the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding. From the get-go, it was a big hit because the concept itself was really promising.
Without a single doubt, of course, everything sounded great, and sure enough, for millions of women, it turned out exactly as was expected. Not a shadow of doubt there in and no one is questioning that, but the thing is, yet, for a few, the reality was quite different.

Well, in a few cases, it came out that this Mirena device can actually or might relocate from the place it was first fixed to, and if that happens, there is pretty much a risk of it rupturing or puncturing the uterine wall. But that wasn’t it, see, other than this main issue, some even reported neurological issues such as severe headaches, vision changes, and pressure in the head, which are medically known as pseudotumor cerebri or idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH).
And sure enough, when such details and reports started to come into public view, a lot of women out there started to raise questions about it all. This is precisely what kept on growing and eventually turned into the famous Mirena lawsuit.
What Exactly Are Women Claiming in the Mirena Lawsuits?
Just like so many other lawsuits on the pharma companies, here as well, the lawsuits mainly allege that the company itself, Bayer, failed to actually let the patients and even the doctors know about these serious risks with the Mirena IUD. And the backlash is also against how the company was marketing or advertising this device as, like a low-maintenance, convenient, and even empowering option. And the FDA also made a comment on that, saying the advertising was kinda of deceptive nature.
Here are some of the complaints people raised against the company:
- Failure to warn: You know, by not disclosing sufficient, clear safety information regarding the risk of brain pressure problems or migration, etc.
- Defective design: Even though it worked out great for many women out there, still, a few people have argued that the device itself was not stable or safe enough to the point that it could have been a hazard.
