You must have seen The Lion King movie, and when it starts, at the very beginning, like at the opening scene, you hear a Zulu chant, which sets off the mood of the film from the very first scene. But right now, that thing is being talked about a lot in the headlines because recently, a Zimbabwean comedian, Learnmore Jonasi, made fun of that whole thing and turned it into a joke punchline. And that’s the very reason why South-African composer Lebo M is suing him because this whole thing can cause a huge earning loss for Disney, and that’s why he’s straight up asking for about $27 million in damages.
How Did This Whole Issue Start?
In fact, this problem first appeared with The Lion King top-of-the-chart opening song that has been recognized worldwide since 1994 when the film was out. Indeed, through the years, people have related that song not only to the film, Disney, but also to Lebo M’s voice.
However, the current quarrel was ignited when Jonasi made a joke during a podcast in February 2026. He joked that the chant literally means people warning each other about a lion coming. The clip was then widely spread a lot on social media. Just recently, Jonasi did the same joke at a stand-up comedy show in LA. This made the matter even bigger online.
What Is Lebo M Claiming In The Lawsuit?
Lebo M’s camp argues that it was a serious matter, not just a harmless joke. He argues that the chant is culturally significant and has a deeper meaning. However, the manner in which Jonasi presented it misled people into having a wrong impression of it. Hence, he feels that this incident discredited his public image and at the same time diminished the honor that is attributed to his work.
Besides that, he also argued that the spreading the joke caused impacts his business connection with Disney and other potential projects. As a result, he is demanding a hefty sum in damages based on the reports of the case and the figures mentioned are around 20 million dollars for lost earnings and another 7 million for penalties. So from his perspective this issue is not merely about feelings or public opinions but also includes financial and professional aspects.
What Is Learnmore Jonasi Saying?
Jomasi’s reply was radically different. He stated that the natural ingredients of comedy are exaggeration, punning, and humorous interpretation. In his view, the joke was just a means of entertainment and it should be taken as such without any other implication. Besides, he points out that joking about public or popular cultural material shouldn’t be a reason for immediate accusations of causing copyright damage.
Besides, some rumours claim that Jonasi has portrayed himself as a fan of Lebo M’s art. At one time, there was a suggestion of transforming the whole incident into a positive thing, such as an educational or explanatory video, but the idea was not pursued. For Jonasi, therefore, the main point of the debate is probably that even a joke is still a joke, and the fact that it makes people laugh should not be a matter for legal proceedings.
