It is not a new thing when a company knows about the defects of its products, and it chooses not to tell the customers about it, and this becomes even more severe or serious when we’re talking about pharma companies. And that’s the same thing going on with Pfizer and this Depo Provera Lawsuit. There is a danger associated with this drug that has recently surfaced, though it is not actually confirmed yet, but it is closely and thoroughly examined at the moment.
How Does Depo-Provera Work?
It could be that you don’t really know how it actually works, so before we get to the problem with it, how about we take a look at how it really works? So, in a way, Depo-Provera is a shot you get only four times a year, most commonly in the arm or the buttock, that is used for birth control. And for the functional aspect of it, see that the drug has a hormone named medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), which is a lab-created version of progesterone.
It is a fact that, yup, before it got authorized by the FDA for birth control in 1992, the drug itself was being used for other purposes. And sure enough, when it got approval in 1992, no doubt, since then, millions of women in the United States have utilized the drug. Research indicates that nearly 25% of women who are sexually active have used this method at least once. And just so you know, the statistics show that Black women are indeed more likely to use this drug, and that is what is catching a lot of people’s attention to this matter as a whole.
And sure enough, when this Depo Provera Lawsuit came to light, and everyone started talking about it, no doubt, the dangers associated with it are now critically being examined on a much larger scale.
What Is the Main Health Concern?
Oh, maybe you don’t yet know that the problem mainly revolves around meningioma. And just so you know, a meningioma is a tumor of the membranes enclosing the brain and the spinal cord. In general, meningiomas are benign, but they may cause serious health issues depending on their location in the body.
Though most of the time, when you have it, usually, the symptoms are frequent headaches, visual disturbances, seizures, difficulty in remembering, and changes of behavior or character.
And it isn’t just for nothing, see, this matter got spicy when in 2024, a big research found out that ladies on Depo-Provera for over a year had nearly 5.6 times the risk of meningioma compared to those not using the contraceptive. That discovery right there was really alarming. If you look at the numbers, see, so far, there are approximately 39,000 cases of meningioma being diagnosed every year in the U.S., and that makes the healthcare professionals and experts wonder like who many of these cases are actually related to this drug.
What Are the Lawsuits About?
And going back to the talk about the lawsuits, see, most of them clearly allege or claim that Pfizer did not properly alert doctors and patients about a risk that was either known or could have been known. The ones suing it right now say that the company itself knew about the possible dangers, but they chose to stay silent about it for a very long time now.
But as you would have guessed it already, Pfizer came out and said that they came to know about the possible connection back in just 2023.
Yet, given the fact that the FDA sanctioned the warning in December 2025, the argument might be less credible than before.
